At The Gates' fourth album "Slaughter of the Soul" is one of most important extreme metal releases in the genre's history. It's influence on the metal scene from the early 00s onward is undeniable, with countless groups aping the multiple unique elements found here; the melodic yet furious riffing, Adrian Erlandsson's blisteringly fast drumming (which lends itself more to hardcore punk than blastbeat-obsessed death metal) and Tomas Lindberg's tortured vocals. The album's production is noteworthy too, combining a thick and raw guitar tone with powerful drums to create a clean yet massive sound, that again influenced many an album post 1995.
