BLACK RANDY AND THE METRO SQUAD - "Pass The Dust, I Think I'm Bowie" LP
$23.99
One of the greatest psychotic records of the 70s, and one of the funniest rock records of all-time. You can play this one all night long. Blame its obscurity on its insanity. It's mostly punk, with a spastic pace and bug-eyed vocals, but chunky Black Randy also had a vision of himself as a kind of deranged soul man. About half of the album amounts to some truly fucked-up funk, complete with covers (with new lyrics) of James Brown and Isaac Hayes (and how many punk records, other than this one, have piano on them?). This isn't purple mohawk music—it's "art-punk", for lack of a better term, but way more fun than such a drab label implies. The pics on the sleeve show a band who look like pretty normal guys. Except for Black Randy's wrecked stalactite teeth. - Jason Hernandez
