FACELESS BURIAL - At The Foothills Of Deliration LP (2022) Since 2014, Australian Death Metal trio FACELESS BURIAL have provided us with two scorching albums, an EP and a demo. Well it is now time to see if this winning streak of brutality continues, as their 3rd record is imminent. Never a band to falter, this opus begins on blast-beats and firestorms of malevolent riffing with more deliciously warped bass lines that provide an intricate tapestry of sound with squealing leads and gargantuan vocals. The punchiness and utterly monolithic production instantly captivates the mind while the musicianship bends into inhuman shapes from the onset, taking us into cosmic realms and sepulchral crypts in sweeps of dynamic brilliance. The technical edge is still very much present, thus fans of insane musicianship can rest easy, faces will melt. That said, this is no obnoxious show of skill without substance as the previous material can attest to. No, FACELESS BURIAL are masterful songwriters as well, whom can string together beautiful atmospherics and odious grooves into an unimaginably bold and vibrant yet still filthily heavy cut of Death Metal. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes with 6 diverse tracks woven into a singularity, this new record lives up to the name FACELESS BURIAL with exquisitely interesting and gripping music that shall hold even the dullest attention span thanks to the malignant heaviness and contorting progressions that are offered in abundance without feeling too haphazard (though definitely chaotic). As soon as anything can become comfortable, an angular change shifts into play with barbaric aggression conveying extremely intricate music. The cymbal work and leads reflect upon strong rhythms and cerebral bass work (which is a real highlight, not just some root-note copying). Astonishingly, it feels in their 8 years of musical life, FACELESS BURIAL continue to reach deeper into new grounds, never rehashing or parodying themselves in their quest for the ultimate in complex Death Metal magnificence. Do not lay idle, for this requires concentration and a keen ear to truly appreciate due to the huge amount of nuance and subtlety behind the scene, but as a whole only the most furiously heavy delivery will suffice. Old school in style yet non-repetitive, this exudes quality and may invoke the old spirits, but the trio still do their own thing with the massive arsenal of sounds at their disposal. Put simply, this is Death Metal at its best.

FACELESS BURIAL - Multiversal Abattoir MLP (2018) - this is on Orange vinyl - Striking while the iron's hot, Multiversal Abattoir follows close on the heels of FACELESS BURIAL's debut album, Grotesque Miscreation (on ILR!), at the beginning of 2018. Here, the Australian power-trio simply sharpen their blades - and those blades are already extremely sharp, possessing unimaginable death metal might. Theirs is an unremittingly dark and dexterous sound which draws in a variety of death metal traditions: the gooey grind of early '90s Finland, the spiraling surge of classic Tampa, the bazooka-blown fury of old Brazil, the atonal angularity ushered in by Immolation, and the cacophonous caverns traveled by Incantation. And yet again, with this wealth of influence and a heaving foundation on which to stand, FACELESS BURIAL exude a charisma all their own, more so than ever on Multiversal Abattoir. Largely, it comes down to the songwriting itself; forever twisting and never stagnating, each song revealing new corridors through which to spelunk, and efficiently. It's no so much a restless blast through scattershot ideas as it is an endlessly malforming entity making rude shapes - and sending them down to be sliced and sluiced in a very literal Multiversal Abattoir. And that's to say nothing of the utterly powerful production, which once again is both death metal classicism to a T and an absolutely skillful balance between clear 'n' cutting and murky 'n' malodorous.
